Replatforming TechBio Company for an 18% Jump in Lab Productivity
When Caris Life Sciences' aging, monolithic LIMS started to slow down patient case creation and drove up costs, Sparq embedded a fast-path Agile team to de-risk the replatforming and deliver a modern, friction-free application that accelerated speed to impact.

Challenge: Replatforming Needed for Increased Efficiency and Optimization
Caris Life Sciences® (Caris) is a leader in molecular profiling and advanced AI to revolutionize healthcare and improve the human condition. To garner increased efficiencies and optimize their innovation, Caris sought to replace an aging, monolithic laboratory information management system (LIMS), with a replatforming into several more productive applications.
Case Manager, an application that creates cases for each tissue sample Caris receives from patient biopsies, was heavy on data entry with inefficiencies that slowed the case creation process down. Caris wanted to replatform Case Manager so they could both accelerate the speed at which cases are processed and minimize the people resource needed for processing. These efforts would help Caris deliver test results more quickly to providers, minimize the time patients had to wait for results, and increase client satisfaction.
Solution: A Modern, More Efficient Application
Sparq embedded a fast-path Agile team with deep product, UI design, and engineering expertise to set up a framework that promoted collaboration, efficiency and continuous improvement. In working with the Caris product owner and users, our UI designers and BAs were able to design and document the requirements that allowed our developers to modernize and improve the overall efficiency of moving cases through the test requisition process.
The result: a modern, efficient application built for real-world scale.
Results: An Increase in Productivity and Number of Cases Processed
The replatformed application helped Caris process cases much more efficiently. Thanks to UI improvements, the application is now more reactive and faster with fewer clicks needed to process a case. In a single month, Caris paid 200 fewer hours of overtime, with seven fewer people processing testing cases compared to the previous version of application. This efficiency equates to an 18% increase in productivity, and a 10% increase in the number of cases processed.
