Modernizing in the Cloud would mean allowing you to reduce tech debt, forgive sins of the past and to take advantage of modern technology. So in that regard, some people will have tech debt that’ll be really hard to eliminate but it’ll also allow them to consume Cloud services that will invariably perform better and be more secure. As you’re modernizing to the Cloud, here are the three tips I would suggest to make it easy.
Identify Low-Risk Items
The first step to modernization is to identify low-risk services or functionality that could be moved to the Cloud. Things like authentication systems, supporting infrastructure and networking. Those things are typically pretty easy to get going into the Cloud and that’ll give you a taste and set the foundation for modernization success.
Don’t Boil the Ocean
Modernizing existing apps can be a complex and fragile thing to do, so you don’t want to boil the ocean. You want to break things down into manageable pieces and then look for opportunities to move low-risk services first. Look at ways to replicate existing functionality in the Cloud using existing services and that will help you move at a steady pace with low risk.
Start with the Basics
Start simple with low-risk services and don’t try to move a whole complex stack all at once. Start small, work your way up and then you should have a foundation for success. Modernizing your app to the Cloud will allow you to have better performance and higher availability, be cost effective and allow you to scale up and down as needed.
