Trading Business Grows its Operations Through a Custom Cloud-Based System

challenge

Internal Management Platform Not Performing

TYR is a commodity trading company dedicated to buying, selling and transporting products such as organic food, wood and grains, with operations across North America and Europe. In order to manage the company’s different transactions and keep information centralized, they were using a system based on a tabular format technology. While it worked at first, the system wasn’t scalable or efficient and couldn’t keep up with the business’ growth. Plus, it was hard to understand and install. The user experience also needed improvements in order to represent the different user types. It utilized on-premise software that required new team members to download the program and run it locally using a VPN, which is a more complex process, especially for non-technical and distributed users. The need for rebuilding the software as a cloud-based solution and elevating its UX was imperative.

BUILDING A NEW CLOUD PLATFORM

In the first stage of this project, our UX team conducted interviews with users and stakeholders in order to reach a deeper understanding of this business’ particularities and their employees’ different needs. At the same time, developers started working on the system’s architecture and defining its structure, making decisions on how the different functionalities should be implemented in a sustainable and reusable way. For this initial phase, and throughout the whole product development, it was vital that our team could access the existing system and conduct different tests and evaluations. Moving forward, designers started working on wireframes and also took some time to validate them with real users before polishing them up in final mockups. As the design system evolved, so did the product’s first version and in a few months we were ready to launch the MVP.

Positive User Feedback and More Efficiency

The platform has launched to the whole company and employees have expressed their satisfaction since their work can now be done in a much simpler and faster way. New staff is easily onboarded to TYR processes and the business leadership has highlighted how the solution allows them to be more efficient and keep their operational headcount at a productive level. As of today, we collaborate with TYR in the solution’s maintenance while planning new functionalities.
